US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says that US', "insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade" along the US-Mexican border. Clinton said on Wednesday ahead of her arrival in Mexico City.
"Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians."
Her remarks were made a day after the Obama administration said it would send more money, technology and manpower to secure the United States' Southwestern frontier and help Mexico battle drug cartels.
Clinton's comments appeared to be the most extensive yet by a top Obama administration official accepting a US role in the drug havoc in Mexico.
More than 7,000 Mexicans have been killed since January 2008 as cartels have warred over trafficking routes and lashed out at the government for deploying the military against them.
