Mexican President Felipe Calderon says certain political groups in the United States are hampering efforts to combat the transport of assault weapons into Mexican territory.

Speaking in an interview with CNN, Calderon talked about obvious reluctance in the US administration to revive a ban on the sale of assault weapons to Mexico which expired in 2004.

Calderon said: "The US officials say that they are facing strong opposition and there is a powerful lobby in the Congress in order to change that situation."

Mexican authorities have called on the US Congress to reinstate the ban on the sale of assault weapons.

According to the Mexican president, 10,000 gun shops operate in the US near the border with Mexico and that 80 percent of weapons confiscated in the Latin American country are believed to have been illegally imported from the US.
