President Hassan Rouhani said Tuesday that Iranian religious minorities enjoy freedom and cordial relationship with their fellow Iranians.

The President made the remarks in a meeting with the new Ambassador of the Vatican to Tehran Leo Boccardi who submitted his credentials to President Rouhani.

Stressing the need for further closeness between Islam and Christianity, President Rouhani added, “Presently, We have common goals and common enemies.

“Extremism and terrorism are our common enemies while standing against those who insult our holy sites and sanctities are among our common goals.”

“Iran’s religious minorities are free to conduct their religious rituals in their own places of worship and also have their own representatives at the Iranian Parliament (Majlis),” said the President.

Meanwhile, the Vatican’s new Apostolic Nuncio to Iran said that Pope Francis seeks closer bilateral relations between the Holy Sees and the Islamic Republic.

Archbishop Boccardi said that Vatican considered new political changes made by the government of President Rouhani as a major achievement.

Vatican believes that the door should always be kept open to negotiations and dialogue.
