Thousands of teachers have held a demonstration in the Mexican capital, Mexico City, to protest an education reform law in the country, Press TV reports.

On Wednesday, the protesters marched toward the capital’s Revolution Monument, where the demonstrators set up tents.

“We want the government to deliver on its promises and we aren’t going to stop until they at least agree to negotiate. Free education is vital to a country’s development and must be a right for all,” Julian Mendez, a protesting teacher, told Press TV.

The demonstration was organized by the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE), the country’s largest teachers’ union.

Earlier, on Tuesday, a number of CNTE members were arrested during protests that turned violent in the southern state of Oaxaca. The protests were held against parliamentary and regional elections.

Under the education reform law, teachers will maintain employment based on evaluations.

Last May, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s government initially agreed to suspend teacher evaluations, before backtracking on the decision.

The protesting teachers say the evaluation of teachers is meant to be used as an excuse for mass layoffs.

The CNTE, which has been protesting the reform since it was signed into law last October, has vowed to increase its protests until an alternative strategy is produced.
