HERE WE COME, O LORD

Shura Council wishes the very best to all the pilgrims leaving for Hajj. As always, we suggest all the travelers to stay abreast with the traveling essentials, such as Know Before You Go and the TSA's rule of 3-1-1. It is also important for pilgrims to be aware of the U.S. Customs policy re:search particularly upon returning back to the United States. Shura Council has helped the US Customs and the TSA in developing Hajj travel resources such as TSA's travel awareness and would urge pilgrims to report back of any untoward situation upon return.

The US Customs of the Los Angeles Airports reassured Shura Council of the protection of civil rights of the pilgrims who can ask for alternate screening over the body image scanners. Unreasonable delays in outbound travel can be reported here and delays in customs clearance or secondary checks upon return must be complained here.

Fiqh Council expects Eid al Adha on Sunday, November 6th, a day after Arafah. It has been Shura Council's policy to celebrate Eid al Adha in solidarity with pilgrims, a day after Arafah. Shura Council encourages the community to avail the convenience of fulfilling your qurbani/udhiya obligations from Helping Hand and Islamic Relief or other service providers of your choice.

We encourage the community to share Eid al Adha with non-Muslims by giving them gifts, such as the book "1001 Inventions" by Professor Salim T. S. Al-Hassani . This book has been made available at local masajid for a discounted price of $25, please click here for more details.

BULLYING AND BULLY-PROOFING

Increasingly we hear of Muslims students being bullied by their peers and in some cases losing lives. Understanding what is bullying may help us save our youth from bullying or being bullied. Research indicates more than 160,000 students miss school each day for fear from bullying including cyber bullying.

We urge parents to be aware of this growing social malaise and educate themselves about bullying and avail all the resources made available by schools. Click here for a valuable resources page from the Orange County Human Relations Commission and ways to bully-proof your kids.

We encourage students to report verbal or physical bullying to the school administration and we ask parents to communicate regularly with children to make sure they are not being bullied or subjected to an intimidating school environment. We highly encourage parents to participate in their children's school PTA activities. Shura Council is a member of the LA Unified School District Superintendents' Interfaith Roundtable and encourages parents and students to contact Shura Council with any ideas, suggestions and concerns re: bullying of young Muslim students.
