Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe

The head of the Metropolitan Police says Britain was just days from a major terror attack similar to the hostage drama at a café in Australia’s most populous city of Sydney, which left three people dead.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with LBC Radio, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said terrorists have been “very close to hurting somebody badly, or killing them” since summer, and there is “no doubt” that there are extremists in the United Kingdom as dangerous as the gunman behind the Sydney café siege.

He further claimed that British officers are struggling to cope with the mountain of digital files seized during police raids.

Bernard said police had come “within days” of foiling terror attacks on British soil and had tackled five plots in the last four months.

“In terms of plots over this last four months really it’s probably five. And we’ve arrested ... about 35 people,” he stated.

“Have we got enough resources? Well we’ve asked the government for more help. We talked right at the beginning about the fact we are losing money but in this areas we’ve got to invest.

“So we’ve asked for £50 million for across the country and we’re waiting for an answer on that,” the Scotland Yard chief noted.

Criticism has mounted on Australian authorities for granting Sydney hostage taker, identified as Man Haron Monis, bail despite various charges against him, including sexual offences and abetting the murder of his ex-wife.

On December 16, the 50-year-old gunman took 17 people hostage at the Lindt Café in Sydney’s central Martin Place business district.

The 16-hour siege ended after Monis was shot and killed. Two of the hostages were also killed.
