Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot gives a statement as the hostage-taking incident unfolds in a café in central Sydney, December 15, 2014.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the hostage-taker holding people in a café in central Sydney claims political motivation.
Making his second statement after the hostage-taking began Monday, Abbott confirmed that the gunman’s action was politically motivated.
Abbott described the incident as disturbing and profoundly shocking, but he stopped short of declaring the hostage-taking an act of terrorism.
As the hostage situation is unfolding in the Australian city of Sydney, reports emerge that the hostage-taker has announced his demands.
The gunman, who is holding an unknown number of people captive in a café, has demanded that a flag of the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group be delivered to him.
There is currently a flag of the al-Nusra Front terrorist group held up inside. The hostage-taker has also demanded a conversation with Abbott via radio. He claims to have planted four bombs, two in the café and two elsewhere in the city.
So far, five hostages have managed to escape from the Lindt chocolate café. Several nearby buildings have been evacuated. The exact number of hostages is not clear, but police say fewer than 30 people are involved.
The ISIL militants have seized some areas in Iraq and Syria, terrorizing and killing people of all communities.
