Mexican police hit by Molotov cocktails thrown by protesters showing their opposition to President Enrique Pena Nieto on December 1, 2012.

As Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto is worn in, thousands protest across the country, clashing with police and injuring at least five officers

Protesters on Saturday threw Molotov cocktails and objects towards police officers, who were standing outside the country’s congress.

Police responded with tear gas, however, one officer was hit by a stone, two were struck by Molotov cocktails and two were affected by the tear gas.

"We weren't expecting something so violent," said one officer.

The people are protesting against Nieto taking over the presidential office since the second runner up in the election, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has refused defeat and has accused Nieto of buying millions of votes.

Inside the congress, signs were held up by lawmakers protesting against Nieto taking office.

Nieto will be taking over the brutal drug war within the country, which has killed more than 60,000 people since outgoing President Felipe Calderon called for a military offensive against the gangs in 2006.
