Some 2000 Mexicans have staged a rally in Mexico City, demanding the release of demonstrators arrested during recent street protests against the nation’s new president.
The rally took place on Monday, with protesters carrying banners that read, “Justice.”
Thousands of Mexicans took to the streets nationwide on Saturday to oppose the inauguration of President Enrique Pena Nieto.
The main protest happened in the capital where the police arrested at least 100 demonstrators.
City officials said over 100 people were also wounded after demonstrators clashed with the police.
Protesters threw Molotov cocktails and objects towards police officers. In response, the riot police used teargas canisters to disperse the angry demonstrators.
Protesters say the runner-up in the July 1 presidential election, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has refused defeat and accused centrist Nieto of buying millions of votes.
In October, Mexico’s seven-judge electoral tribunal unanimously named Nieto the winner of the July 1 presidential election.
Nieto brought the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) back to power after 12 years in the political wilderness.
