Supporters of the Mexican presidential candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Enrique Pena Nieto, celebrate in Mexico City, July 1, 2012.

Exit polls from Mexico’s presidential election show the candidate of the country's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Enrique Pena Nieto, in a comfortable lead over his rivals.

According to the preliminary results released on Sunday, Nieto led in the election with about 40 percent of the vote.

Nieto’s victory, if confirmed, will mark a dramatic comeback for the party that governed Mexico for seven decades until 2000.

“Enrique Pena Nieto appears to be accomplishing what many thought would never happen again: the return of a strong and dynamic PRI,” said Eric Olson of the Washington-based Mexico Institute.

More than 70 million people were eligible to cast their ballots on Sunday and choose their president, members of parliament as well as state governors.

Nieto’s main opponents were left-wing politician Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and Josefina Vazquez Mota from the ruling conservative PAN party.

With nearly one third of Mexico's 112 million population living in extreme poverty, economy has been one of the main issues in the candidates' campaigns for election.

Another issue dominating the campaigns was the war on drugs that was launched nearly six years ago by President Felipe Calderon. His military crackdown on drug cartels has turned parts of the country into war zones.

The main opposition candidates say that more than 55,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence since 2006.
