Protestors march in the streets of Morelia, a city in the north central part of Michoacan State, Mexico on October 17, 2012.

Teachers and students have taken to streets in Mexico to demand the release of protesters seized earlier during clashes with police.

About 2,200 demonstrators marched and blocked roads in western Mexico on Wednesday, calling for the release of the 98 students arrested on Monday.

On Monday, Mexican police officers in Tiripetio, Michoacan clashed with students protesting against a curricular reform launched by the government, arresting nearly 176 of them. Seventy eight were released later, yet 98 still remain in custody.

Juan Jose Ortega Madrigal, a leader of Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion teachers' union, said the protest will continue “until the release of all 98 young people who are still held.”

According to reports, at least 10 police officers were also injured during the Monday’s protest in which the protesters set fire to a number of buses in the streets, and hurled homemade explosives and stones at police.

In response, police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the angry demonstrators.

The protest turned violent after the students’ demand was turned down by the authorities

The new program reduces the number of technical subjects and excludes indigenous languages, and introducing more credit hours into English and computer science which students see as low-priority subjects.
